When did Cyclone Yasi Occur?
Cyclone Yasi made landfall at 1am on the 3rd of February, 2011, at Mission Beach, the southern tropical coast of Queensland. Normally cyclones weaken and form into a tropical low as it reaches land but Cyclone Yasi was abnormally large, it maintained a strong core and continued to cause destruction across northern Queensland– until it formed into a tropical low at Mount Isa, approximately 3000km from it's birthplace.
Cyclone Yasi deleveloped as a tropical low in the waters of northwest Fiji on the 29th of January and was classified as a tropical disturbance as it began moving in a general westward track (Bureau of Meteorology, 2013). North of Vanuatu, cyclone Yasi's system intensified into a cyclone Category 2 on the 31st of January 2011 and then rapidly changed to a category 3 the same day.
On the 1st of February 2011, Cyclone Yasi started to accelerate towards the Queensalnd coast while upgrading to category 4. The next day, the 2nd of February 2011, Cyclone Yasi rapidly intensified to category 5, making landfall on the 3rd of February.
