The Impact on People
Considering the size of Cyclone Yasi, there were no fatalities with an obvious connection to the Cyclone. However there was a man who suffocated from the fumes from his generator while sheltering in a poorly ventilated area.
Many people from various towns between Cairns and Townsville slept in evacuation centres. Overall 150 houses were destroyed while 650 were deemed unliveable. A minimum of 200 000 houses lost power and after a month, 700 were still unconnected due to safety reasons (Katec1, 2013).
Although many houses were destroyed, the residents still maintained a positive outlook on the situation.
